How Much Does 2D Animation Cost Per Minute in 2026?

A dim classroom lit by one warm spotlight, with a girl standing at the front, a teacher by the door and a boy at his desk.
Lighting, characters and acting all add to the price of animation. A still from What If They Laugh?, made with Drawn Films.

Short answer

Hiring someone to make 2D animation costs roughly $1,500 to $15,000 per finished minute in 2026: small studios and experienced freelancers at the low end, US and Western European studios at the top, and hand-drawn frame-by-frame work even more. That’s about $25 to $250 per second. Doing it yourself costs time instead, and story apps such as Drawn Films cost about $1 per minute of film.

Animation prices vary more than almost anything else you can buy for a video, because “2D animation” covers everything from a whiteboard sketch to a hand-drawn cartoon. The figures below come from three 2026 pricing guides, all written by studios that sell animation, so read them as asking prices. Prices checked on 20 October 2026.

How much does 2D animation cost per minute?

Most hired 2D animation costs $1,500 to $15,000 per finished minute in 2026. Here’s how it breaks down by who makes it:

Who makes it Price per finished minute Source
Low-cost freelancers and template-based work $50 to $2,500 Zelios
Experienced freelancers about $1,500 to $2,000 B2W
Small studios in Eastern Europe or Asia $1,500 to $8,000 Zelios
Mid-size and established studios (US, Western Europe) $5,000 to $15,000 Zelios, Pixune
Premium and broadcast studios $15,000 to $50,000+ Zelios
A story app (Drawn Films, Creator plan) about $1 Our pricing

The wide freelancer range is real: a beginner on a marketplace and a senior animator are both “freelancers”. Studio prices often include things a freelancer’s may not: a script, storyboards, voice recording, music and someone to manage the project.

How much does each style of 2D animation cost?

Style matters as much as who makes it. One guide’s 2026 ranges per minute:

Style Price per minute
Whiteboard $1,500 to $8,000
Motion graphics $2,000 to $10,000
Cut-out or flat 2D $2,500 to $9,000
2D character animation $3,000 to $12,000
Frame-by-frame, hand-drawn $8,000 to $25,000+

Story videos for YouTube are usually character animation: people who talk, move and feel things. That’s one of the dearer styles, because characters have to act, and every line of dialogue needs a mouth that moves with it.

How much does 2D animation cost per second?

Divide the per-minute price by 60:

Per minute Per second
$1,500 $25
$5,000 about $83
$15,000 $250
$25,000 (hand-drawn) about $417

Per-second quotes are common for short ads and logo animations. For anything longer than about 20 seconds, ask for a per-minute or whole-project price instead.

What makes animation more expensive?

The same few things push every quote up:

  • Characters. More characters, more detail, and more acting mean more work in every shot.
  • Lip-sync. A mouth that matches each word is slow to animate by hand.
  • Locations. Each new background has to be designed and drawn.
  • Length. Longer films cost more in total, though often less per minute.
  • Voices and music. Voice actors and licensed music are often charged on top.
  • Revisions. Quotes usually include a set number of rounds of changes; more cost extra.
  • Deadlines. Rush jobs cost more almost everywhere.

How much does 2D animation cost in India, the UK or the US?

Where the studio is changes the price a lot. One 2026 guide puts animation studio rates at $100 to $199 an hour in the US, $25 to $100 in Europe and $25 to $49 in Asia, and prices small studios in Asia and Eastern Europe at $1,500 to $8,000 a minute, against $5,000 to $15,000 for mid-tier studios in the US and Western Europe (which includes the UK). So a studio in India will usually quote well below a London or New York studio for the same minute, though the range within each country is still wide. Always compare the portfolio, not just the price.

What would an animated YouTube channel cost to run?

This is where per-minute prices get serious. Say you post one 5-minute story a week. That’s about 21.7 minutes of animation a month (5 minutes × 52 weeks ÷ 12 months).

How you make it Cost for 21.7 minutes a month
The cheapest freelancers ($50 to $300 a minute) about $1,100 to $6,500
Small studios ($1,500 to $8,000 a minute) about $32,500 to $173,600
US or Western European studios ($5,000 to $15,000 a minute) about $108,500 to $325,500
Drawn Films, Creator plan (30 minutes a month) $29

That’s why so few people hire a studio for a weekly YouTube channel, and why most new animated channels either learn to animate or use a tool that does the drawing.

Is it cheaper to animate it yourself?

In money, yes. Blender (with its Grease Pencil tools), Krita and OpenToonz are free. Paid tools such as Toon Boom Harmony and Moho charge a fee but are made for professional work.

In time, no. You’d be learning to draw or rig characters, animate them, sync mouths to voices, and edit sound. Expect weeks of learning before your first good minute, and days of work for each few minutes after that. If you love animation as a craft, that time is the point. If you want to tell stories every week, it’s the biggest cost there is.

How much does Drawn Films cost?

Drawn Films charges for minutes of finished film, and you can see every shot before you make the video, so you don’t pay to find out you don’t like it.

Plan Price Minutes of film Per minute
Free $0 1 film, up to 1 minute (with a watermark) Free
Creator $29 a month 30 a month about $0.97
Studio $99 a month 100 a month about $0.99
Creator, yearly $208.80 a year 360 up front about $0.58
Studio, yearly $712.80 a year 1,200 up front about $0.59

Extra minutes cost $25 for 10, $59 for 30 or $99 for 60. A film that fails to render uses no minutes, and a remake only uses the minutes of the shots it redrew. Studio adds your own characters and lets you change any character’s clothes, hair and hats.

When is a studio worth it?

Hire a studio when you need a look no one else has, a brand’s exact style, a broadcast-quality ad, or complicated action scenes. You get a team, a custom art style and someone to manage it all.

Use a story app when you want to post often, test story ideas fast, or run a channel on a creator’s budget. The trade is a fixed drawing style and ready-made characters, in exchange for minutes instead of weeks and about a dollar instead of thousands. If you’re starting a channel, these animated niches are growing right now, and here’s what YouTube needs before it pays you.
